A market stall in Thailand sells the controversial 'stinky' durian fruit for an astonishing 350 dollars a kilogram.

Customers even have to pre-order the notoriously divisive sweet treat a YEAR before they can collect it from the stall in Bangkok, Thailand.

Owner Nid is recognizable from her loud husky voice as she shouts like an East End to passers-by in the Chatuchak market.

'These are very special because they are the first batch of durian of the season,' says Nid, who has been selling the fruit her whole life.

'With my durian stall, you can ask for what texture you want. I sell according to what my consumers want.'

Nid sells her fruit starting at 3,000 Baht a kg (86 USD) or 12,000 Baht a kg (345 USD) for the tastiest of the batch.

The price is staggeringly more expensive than the average retail price of around 150 baht a kg (4.30 USD).

Nid added: 'My customers can ensure that the fruits we sell are completely natural. When they eat them, they don’t generate heat in the throat.'

Durian season typically starts in April and lasts until June. Street stands pop up around the country selling the fruit and supermarket shelves are packed with the distinctive pale yellow dish.

Despite its popularity, durian is as divisive as Marmite. Signs in public places such as trains and shopping malls warn people not to open the fruit.

Its pungent aroma is sweet and tangy for some. But for others, it has the aroma of rotting trash.

For fans, it is the best fruit. Demand from China is also booming. Shipments worth an estimated 120 billion baht (3.5 million dollars) will be sent to the Communist state in 2022.

Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Sri-on said that it is a 10 per cent increase on 2021.

The 'Mong Thong' or golden pillow variety of durian is believed by China to be the best in the world.

With demand increasing, it seems there is no stopping the 'king of fruits.'
