This is the spectacular moment a huge lightning bolt illuminated an expressway as a storm rolled in.

Footage shows the vivid lightning strike touching down near the North Luzon Expressway in Pampanga province, the Philippines on May 22.

Driver Dan Contreras said: 'We were so surprised because it struck so close. We could feel the vibrations from the thunder inside the car.'

Lightning is caused by electrical imbalances between the clouds and the ground. About 100 cloud-to-ground bolts strike the Earth every second, with each bolt containing up to a billion volts of electricity.
