A fire reportedly caused by an overloaded transformer ripped through a primary school in Thailand.

The fire broke out at the Anu Ban Khon Kaen School in Khon Kaen province on May 30 afternoon after an electric transformer short-circuited in one of its buildings.

Footage shows black smoke wafting out the windows the school as students rushed to safety.

Firefighters and the police arrived to extinguish the flames while the teachers evacuated the children away from danger.

No one was reported injured in the incident, and the fire was successfully contained within one area.

Provincial electricity authorities later inspected the scene and found that the electric transformer was small but was 'connected to three phases' which caused it to overload.

Sukda Musikawan, deputy director of the Anu Ban Khon Kaen School, said he heard the explosion from near the second floor of Building No. 1 where primary students went. The teachers had to quickly transfer the students and also called the municipality officers for help.

Officials plan to install a new electric transformer at the school and will also replace the wires to ensure the safety of students and staff.
