Soapy massage shops re-open in Thailand as Covid-19 restrictions ease
Footage shows soapy massage parlour brothels re-opening in Thailand today as the country eased Covid-19 restrictions.
Many of the venues have been closed since the pandemic erupted in March, 2020. Ministers hope that allowing the entertainment venues to open again will boost the economy and encourage more tourists to return.
Bangkok Governor Khachit Chatchawanit approved the measures intended to reinvigorate the country's tourism and entertainment industry.
Night clubs, bars and strip club gogo bars were also allowed to re-open from June 1 though prostitutes and other people working in the nightlife industry have been warned by government officials to wear masks and wash their hands. Social distancing guidelines, temperature checks and outdoor mask mandates will also remain.
Two years ago tourism made up an estimated 21 per cent of Thailand's annual GDP, generating 1.8 trillion baht (52.3 billion USD) in revenue. However, the country's National Economic and Social Development Council predicted that it could be 2025 before similar numbers are seen.
Analysts said that in the coming years, around seven million workers will continue to be affected by the economic harm from the Covid-19 pandemic.
