Three tigers and an Asian black bear were rescued from a zoo in Thailand.

Tigers Pong, Paeng, Rambo, and a lone bear were the last remaining ones to be taken out of the abandoned facility that closed last year on the island of Phuket.

They were virtually abandoned and left without food due to the closure of the zoo, which had suffered from a lack of tourists during the pandemic.

Volunteers checked the health of the animals during the rescue mission, especially Rambo who was partially-blind.

The zoo was double-checked for more animals before leaving with the four creatures that were taken to their new home in a shelter in Phetchaburi.

Nonprofit organisation Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand founder Edwin Week said: ‘There were three tigers left who were all on their own, and one black bear, and now finally there are no more animals left in the zoo.'

The group had been removing animals from the zoo since late April as the condition in the closed-down zoo worsened.

Shocked visitors reported the alleged cruel condition in the zoo ‘as the animals were left to starve' after its owner filed for bankruptcy due to the pandemic. The group had since been processing the removal of the animals to their new home.

Edwin added that they would need another enclosure for the tigers and appealed for help.

He said: ‘We need to build one more backup enclosure. We'll do fundraising in the next few months where hopefully we will raise enough money by then.'
