An abandoned baby was found lying in a pile of rubbish in Thailand.

The dehydrated infant was found by Nonphan Saribut, 20, and her partner while they were walking along the neighbourhood in Nonthaburi province on June 13.

The pair told police they heard the baby crying, but weren't sure where the sound was coming from. They searched around the area and pinpointed the source to a set of garbage bins nearby.

They opened the rubbish bags one by one, and were shocked to discover the abandoned newborn lying among rotten food and discarded wrappers. It was naked, drenched in filthy water, and riddled with insect bites all over its body.

Nonphan reported the incident to the police, who took the child, estimated to be about a week old, to be cleaned before delivering it to a hospital.

Nonphan said: 'I was only walking along the street and I heard crying from the pile of rubbish. I thought it sounded like a baby so I went to check. I called the police straight away.'

Police Colonel Wanchai Chuchit from the Bang Yai police station said: ‘The police are inspecting the CCTV around the area and will investigate to find the offender.

'The baby has already been transferred to Pranang Klao hospital and is now safe.'
