Church brutally burned down for 'opposing military junta' in Myanmar
A church was set alight for allegedly opposing the military junta in Myanmar.
Footage shows the burning Christian building that was allegedly set on fire by military forces during a crackdown on anti-junta communities in Daw He Khu village, Karen state on June 16.
Witnesses said that the military also burned down the houses of villagers who allegedly supported the resistance group Karenni Nationalities Defence (KNDF).
The two armed groups have been clashing in the area since June 10 with the military increasingly launching its attacks on religious groups.
A witness said: ‘The military arrived here on June 10. In June 14, they began burning down the houses and opened fire on the villagers with heavy artillery. Some have joined the KNDF and there was fighting ever since. The churches were being burned.'
The Burmese military under chief Min Aung Hlaing allegedly targeted houses of worship, faith leaders, and religious communities in an ongoing crackdown on opposition groups.
It arrested religious leaders even those from the Buddhist majority for opposing the military junta despite closely associating with Buddhism - which was followed by a majority of the population - to promote its legitimacy. This led to a rise in persecution of non-Buddhist communities such as Christians and Rohingya Muslims.
Army chiefs seized power with a violent coup in February last year. Well-liked former leader Aung San Suu Kyi was kidnapped and kept under house arrest before being found guilty of 'sham charges' and jailed for 11 years. She is currently awaiting trial hearings for a further 20 politically motivated charges.
