Drone footage showcases a ruby-coloured lake in a desert in northern China.

Stunning video filmed in Alxa Left Banner in Inner Mongolia on June 12 shows the blood-red Wulan Lake in the Tengger Desert.

According to the local herdsmen, Wulan Lake is an inland sea which has a 100-year history.

Since the lake is red and Wulan means red in Mongol, locals named it Wulan Lake.

The water in the lake is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The depth of the lake is more than 2 metres.

The red colour of the lake may be related to the presence of iron ore or red microorganisms in it.

The Wulan Lake is still undeveloped due to inconvenient transportation.

在苍凉的大西北沙漠之中，有一片未经开发的红色湖泊，它位于内蒙古阿拉善左旗腾格里沙漠腹地之中。腾格里沙漠有大大小小的各种湖，已是点缀沙漠的壮丽美景。黄色沙漠里再出现红色湖泊，更是一种奇观了。鲜红的湖水像血液一样在地表上流淌，而湖面的形状犹如一颗跳动心脏印在大地之上。
这个神秘的红色湖泊，甚至我们在地图上就无法找到。这里没有电，没有网络，手机没有信号。远离了城市的喧嚣，神秘而又壮观。
据当地牧民介绍，这个湖是碱水湖，叫乌兰湖，存在了少说也有上百年。“乌兰”在蒙古语翻译过来就是红色的意思。每年当沙漠里降水少、湖里水位下降时，这里的湖就呈现出红色，故当地人取名乌兰湖。因为是碱水湖，不能游泳。湖里的水，夏天特烫，冬天特冷，水深的地方有两米多深。冬天结一层薄冰，冰上不能走人。至于湖水为什么会是红色的，听人说可能和这里有铁矿或湖里有红色的微生物有关。
由于湖边没有任何制高点，在过去也没有航拍器材，所以谁也不知道这片湖泊从天空俯瞰竟是如此的神奇，直到近些年它才慢慢走进我们的视野。而交通的不便也让它的原生态一直保留至今，未被开发。（视频由内蒙古台提供）
