Footage shows army helicopters dumping water on a heatwave fire in Miren-Kostanjevica, Slovenia, on July 21.

Military officials said soldiers had been providing assistance tackling the blaze since it started on July 15. They had dumped an average of 135,000 liters of water a day but on July 21, more than 500,000 liters were used to douse the flames.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze amid a heat wave that has scorched parts of Europe.

Families living in four villages near the wildfire site bordering Italy had been evacuated. No one was reported hurt from the fires.

Officials in Slovenia said the raging blaze in the southwestern Kras region was the biggest since the country became an independent nation in 1991.
