The annual Lewes to Newhaven raft race saw contestants pelted with eggs and covered in flour as they paddled along the River Ouse on July 31.

Footage shows teams of competitors paddling their DIY rafts as crowds that lined the river threw eggs at them.

The first race was held in 1975 and involved 35 crews on their homemade rafts.

The theme for this year’s race is ‘Party Time’, and money raised from the event will support two charities – RNLI Newhaven Lifeboat Station and Sussex Search and Rescue.

The crews will have to build their self-propelled rafts and be able to complete a seven-mile segment of the River Ouse, running from Malling Recreational Ground in Lewes to Newhaven.
