Smoke was seen rising over homes following the suspected detonation on munitions amid 'heavy fighting' between local troops and Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Footage shows a column of smoke drifting upwards as a siren rings out from Kozatske village in the Kherson Oblast at sunset on Thursday evening September 1.

The blaze came after a depot of military hardware was allegedly attacked in the Russian-occupied region.

State media said the Ukrainian Air Force has bombarded the country's south, allegedly destroying ammunition and fuel depots, and cutting off Russian supply lines in an attempt to retake the region.

Kherson is the first major city in Ukraine to fall into Russian hands.
