Two American tourists and a mahout were injured after falling to the ground while riding an elephant in Thailand.

Alice Josephihe Charoonsak, 71, and Virginia Lee Stokes, 85 were on top of the elderly bull when it collided with another beast at the Pattaya Elephant Village on Monday September 5.

The pair were heard shouting for help before staff found lying on the hard dusty floor with the mahout Chaluang Aobun, 73, also injured.

Paramedics arrived to treat the holidaymakers before taking them to the hospital. They suffered cuts and bruises on their legs while the mahout was in pain across his body.

After questioning, officials found that the tourists had been sitting on the back of a 70-year-old male elephant named Plai Somjit.

However, while taking the pair down from the animal's back, another 63-year-old elephant named Plai Boonsri squeezed up next to Plai Somjit, causing him to stumble and fall.

The tourist seated on top of the elephant fell straight to the group along with the elderly mahout.

The elephant camp owner told local media he spoke with the tourists to check on them before having them taken to Bangkok Pattaya hospital for treatment.

Paramedic Tongchai Sattani said both of the tourists were in pain following the fall. He added: 'The tourists were riding an old elephant so normally they are very calm and safe. Fortunately, their injuries were not severe and we took them both to the hospital to be checked.'
