This is the moment a giant alligator takes a stroll through a suburban neighbourhood in Texas.

The incident took place along Peek Road near Buffalo Bayou, which is a slow-moving river in Texas, in the Grand Lakes area in Fort Bend County, on the outskirts of Houston.

The footage shows the large reptile casually making its way on some grass, along a wall, in the quiet neighbourhood.

The images released by the Constable Chad Norvell of Fort Bend County, with the officer saying: 'Nice weather for a walk! This morning in Grand Lakes along Peek Rd at Buffalo Bayou.'

It reportedly took hours to remove and relocate the alligator. The large reptile, reportedly measuring 11 feet long, was eventually taken to Gator Country, which is an alligator sanctuary in the coastal Texan city of Beaumont.

American alligators are often found near swamps, rivers, bayous and marshes. 'Bayou' is a term used in the southern US in reference to a body of water that is either a slow-moving river, or a marshy lake or wetland.

Buffalo Bayou is a slow-moving body of water that goes through Houston, eventually ending up in the Gulf of Mexico.
