This is the incredible moment 'hurricane hunters' flew into Hurricane Ian to collect storm data.

The Hurricane Hunters - the reconnaissance unit of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - braved the ferocious weather system to gather information about the storm as it headed towards the western coast of Florida.

Footage shows a technician launching a dropsonde - an expendable weather device that measures data such as temperature, wind speed, and humidity - into Hurricane Ian's eye on September 25.

Ian has reportedly slammed into Cuba as a Category 3 storm on Tuesday, September 27. Meteorologists have warned that it may strengthen further into a Category 4 system before hitting Florida.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has described the storm as a 'major disaster,' warning the state to brace for impact.
