This is the dramatic moment the dome of a large mosque collapsed during a major fire in Indonesia.

Footage shows how the structure crowning the Jakarta Islamic Center Mosque crumbled as the blaze ravaged its foundations on Wednesday, October 19.

Helpless onlookers could only scream while the dome toppled over in a cloud of black smoke and ash.

Isnawa Adji, chief executive of Jakarta's disaster management agency, said: "We have deployed 20 fire engines to put out the fire".

Officers reported there were no casualties from the incident, as all workers inside the mosque fled immediately after the fire broke out.

Police Superintendent Slamet Wibisono Yanto of the North Jakarta Metro Police said the fire started while four workers were doing renovations on the dome of the mosque.

They were reportedly melting down the dome's rolled asphalt roofing, but their tools are believed to have started the fire.

He said: "The renovation used triplex material. It is suspected that the spark from the fuel equipment hit a glass bulb until a fire broke out".

The North Jakarta Metro Police are still interrogating the workers and eyewitnesses to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Paimun Karim, head of the Jakarta Islamic Center study subdivision, said: "The rapid collapse of the dome may also have been caused by the load of 12 fan lights weighing one ton".

Local media reported that the fire only affected the dome and did not engulf important documents or equipment.

The Jakarta Islamic Center Mosque is a house of worship that also serves as a hub for Islamic studies and research.

It was opened in 2003 on top of a former sprawling red-light district in the area.
