China's energy consumption has grown by an average of 3 percent annually over the past decade, supporting an average economic growth of 6.6 percent, said Zhai Qing, vice minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, at the fifth press conference held by the Press Center of the 20th Communist Party Congress of China.

The annual average of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in cities at prefecture level and above dropped from 46 micrograms per cubic meter in 2015 to 30 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021, making China the country with the fastest improvement in air quality in the world.

The proportion of fine surface water sections in China reached 84.9 percent, close to the level of developed countries.
