An 11-metre-tall Soviet soldier monument in Uzhhorod, western Ukraine, was dismantled on November 9.

Footage shows the sculpture named "Ukraine liberators" being pulled over near the border with Slovakia.

Local officials stated the monument was dismantled as it could fall on people and it will be stored. Another monument will be erected in its place.

The statue was erected in 1970 on the 25th anniversary of the end of World War II.

In the Ukrainian Uzhgorod in Transcarpathia, a monument to Soviet soldiers was demolished. An eleven-meter monument weighing 19 tons stood next to a checkpoint near the border of Ukraine and Slovakia

According to the regional authorities, the decision to demolish the monument "Ukraine to the Liberators" was made because it was allegedly in disrepair and could fall on people. The dismantled sculpture of a soldier was promised to be sent for storage "to a certain place", and another monument would be erected in its place later.

The monument "Ukraine to the Liberators" appeared in Uzhgorod on May 8, 1970 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the liberation from the fascist invaders. The monument is included in the list of cultural heritage of Nezalezhnaya.
