A resident was rescued from the roof of his home after heavy floods hit villages in the eastern Philippines, where at least 10 people have been killed in the torrential weather so far this year.

Joy Pomida wore a makeshift raincoat made of plastic bags while a rescuer helped him onto a canoe amid a deluge in Dolores town, Eastern Samar, on January 10.

At least 10 people have died across the Philippines due to the inclement weather that has been battering the Southeast Asian country since the start of the year, the Office of Civil Defense said Wednesday.

State weather forecaster PAGASA said a low-pressure area and the shear line - or front where cold and warm air meet - are causing the torrential downpours.

Tropical Philippines sees an average of 20 storms per year. The third-world country - ranked among the most vulnerable to climate change - grapples with devastating floods and landslides annually.
