Fishermen made giant scarecrows from stinky dried fish for a festival in the Philippines.

Footage shows the 15ft-tall tower of dehydrated ponyfish weaved together to form a woman's body in Isabela province on January 23.

The female sculpture was a scarecrow with hair made from fishing nets used by locals to trawl their products.

It was the highlight of the annual Bambanti festival which featured the town's livelihood of fishing and farming.

Local official Reynald Bernabe said: ‘The fish was seasonal, so we had to catch them before the festival. It was all worth it.'

The fishermen used a total of 45 kilograms of dried fish or about 800 pieces of pony fish.

Reynald added: ‘We chose the woman standing because we have been devastated by floods and the Covid-19.

‘She symbolised that whatever happened, we would remain standing.'
