The zoo in Vienna, Austria celebrated its new giraffe calf and a young orangutan. Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck said in a statement: "Conservation breeding is a central task of modern, scientifically managed zoos and aquariums in order to secure the existence of endangered animal species through reserve populations."

Head of the zoological department Eveline Dungl explained that the youngest member of the giraffe herd turned one year old this month.
She said: "The first birth of the female giraffe in 10 years, went quickly and without complications. Unfortunately, the acceptance of the young animal by the mother was a bit bumpy. It was an important experience for the social structure of the entire herd to witness the birth and growth of a young animal."

Hering-Hagenbeck explained that the zoo also welcomed its first orangutan offspring in more than 20 years in 2020. He said: "In 2020, two new females joined the orangutan group. The combination of support and years of experience is very important."
