This is the heartstopping moment a mother cheated death when she stepped on a live COBRA lurking outside her front door.

Prim Praw, 40, was leaving for work when her car wouldn't start so she turned back - only to feel something rubbery beneath her foot.

CCTV shows how Prim was startled and leaped in the ear as the serpent quickly became tangled in her feet. It then slithered out of the yard at the family home in the Nong Chok district of Bangkok, Thailand, on February 6.

Chillingly, cobras kill hundreds of people a month in the region with most deaths coming from people who tread on them by mistake.

Mother-of-five Prim said her 'whole body was shaking because she was so scared' following the brush with death with the deadly reptile.

Speaking in the video, said: ' The moment I stepped on it, the snake just disappeared over there. It slithered to the back. I didn't have enough courage to try and hit it. I was scared. I thought of it again yesterday and I'm still in fear. I'm still shaking.'

Prim called her partner Eakraj but by the time he arrived to check, the dark black snake with its distinctive shiny scales had disappeared.

The mother, who works as a golf caddy, said: ' At that moment, I didn't know what to do. My whole body was shaking because I was scared. I don't know what snake it was, all I remember is it had a yellow shine and a pattern to it.

'Maybe the snake was just looking for somewhere cool to rest. I came out and just stepped on it. From now on I will look down at the ground'

Researchers found that 7,000 people are treated for snake bites each year in Thailand alone. Suchai Suteparuk from the Division of Toxicology at Chulalongkorn University reported that 30 of those die, with cobras being the biggest killer.

The number is far high across Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, with thousands being killed each year by cobras.
