At least four people were killed while dozens remain missing after an open-pit coal mine collapsed in Inner Mongolia on Wednesday.

More than 50 workers were buried when a steep slope apparently caved in at the mining site in the Alxa League region of the Chinese autonomous region on February 22 afternoon.

Dramatic footage shows rocks and soil tumbling down the large pit and kicking up a huge cloud of dust.

China state media reported that hundreds of personnel were deployed to the mine, but the rescue mission was temporarily halted when another landslide occurred in the area.

The search and rescue has since resumed. At least four people were found dead, while six were injured. Forty-nine more are still missing.

The mine was operated by the Xinjing Coal Mining Company. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
