Authorities have installed a 'smart manhole cover' near a shrine in northeastern Thailand.

The colourful cover, designed by students of Khon Kaen University, was placed at the City Pillar Shrine in Khon Kaen province on April 4.

It incorporated elements associated with the province, such as the Phuwiangosaurus dinosaur, the city's gates, golden shower flowers, and red soil.

Also on the manhole cover was a QR code which, when scanned, led to an augmented reality image showing a futuristic Khon Kaen, envisioned by authorities as a 'smart city'. Tourists can also browse the website to learn more about the city's history and current events.

Achawadee Chiambunchong, Deputy Managing Director of Navakarn Metal Chonburi Co Ltd, said that the manhole cover, which weighed 35 kilos, was the first artistic manhole cover to be installed in Thailand.

She said: 'The eye-catching installation not only reflects the identity of Khon Kaen but also replaced the ordinary grey metal covers, adding a touch of artistry to the city's streets.'

The first three prototype manhole covers in Khon Kaen were installed at the City Pillar Shrine, the Treasury Museum Khon Kaen, and the Chao Por Khun Pak Dee community, she added.

The manhole covers are expected to last around five years before they need to be replaced.
