Agonising video captured the moment Christian devotes were voluntarily crucified in San Fernando in the Philippines on Good Friday, 7 April.

Wilfredo Salvador, 66, became the first local man to perform the normally annual ritual since it returned after being suspended during the Covid pandemic.

It is thought he may also be the oldest man to undergo the ritual in that area. He was nailed to the cross alongside two other men.

He stared at the sky and appeared to mumble a prayer during the painful process.

Mr Salvador is a fisherman who has been volunteering for crucifixion for 15 years, since recovering from a nervous breakdown.

Video captured a similar scene in Sta. Lucia village too.

In San Fernando area there are three villages where such crucifixion takes place: San Juan (where Salvador was crucified, alongside others), Sta. Lucia (where three men were crucified) and Cutud (where five men were crucified).

Good Friday marks the day Jesus Christ is supposed to have died on the cross, before being resurrected on Easter Sunday.
