A Thai street artist transformed an old market into a hip landmark with a colourful mural.

Footage shows Patcharapol Taengruen, with the pseudonym Alex Face, painting a giant image on the wall of a decades-old building in Krasom market in Phang Nga province, Thailand, on April 24.

He drew a giant variation of a Baby Mardi, which is a signature character he created.

The character appeared to be partially submerged underwater to symbolize the sea as a tourist attraction in the province.

Krasom mayor Wiwat Sanguanpong said: ‘I express my gratitude towards the Tourism Authority of Thailand for bringing in a well-known artist to create a new and attractive spot for tourists to visit in Phang Nga.'

The mayor explained that the buildings in Krasom market are old and serve as entrances to Ao Phang Nga National Park, with the nearby Surakul Pier being an important point of access for tourists.

He said: ‘The municipality has planned a project to support local tourism and generate revenue for the locals by connecting with this spot. I invite tourists to visit this place.'
