A husband suffered burns in a gas explosion that tore through his family's kitchen in Thailand.

Pichet Rungsiri, 52, was re-heating some curry for a midnight meal but found that their automatic stove failed to spark a fire.

Leaving the stove knob turned on, he went to fetch a gas lighter gun and pressed the ignition button - only to trigger a powerful blast that sparked the built-up flammable gas in the poorly ventilated room in Chachoengsao province on May 20.

CCTV footage shows how the explosion shattered tiles and cookware, with a shocked Pichet running out of the kitchen, his face, arms, and legs burnt and his shorts still ablaze.

His wife Sukanya, 47, and other residents shut off the gas valve and extinguished the fire in the kitchen before it could grow larger.

Pichet was rushed to the Buddhasothorn Hospital and transferred to the Ruampat Chachoengsao Hospital for further medical care. He is currently in the intensive care unit after doctors cleaned his wounds to prepare him for surgery.

Sukanya said: 'We are really nervous because we haven't been able to visit him yet in the ICU. The doctors told us they had to remove the dead skin to prevent infections.

'I decided to share the footage to inform others, especially those who seldom use the kitchen, to be careful with gas appliances. Mishandling them can lead to explosions like this one.

'Whenever I cook in our kitchen, I would open the windows to ensure there is proper ventilation. My husband used the stove at night when the air conditioner is turned on and all the windows are closed, leading to the gas build-up and explosion.'

She added that the family have replaced the broken stove and were grateful their house was spared from further damage.
