Waves were whipped up along the coast of Diu, western India, as Cyclone Biparjoy approached on June 15.

Footage shows locals have been evacuated from shops and residential areas in the town.

Some workers and their families have moved into relief homes where they aim to keep safe as the cyclone passes.

Around 50,000 people have evacuated in the state of Gujarat so far.

Administration in western India's Union Territory of Diu has been on high alert with Cyclone Biparjoy expected to make landfall in the area.

Visuals shot on June 15 showed the turbulent waves in the Arabian sea caused by the cyclone. The severe cyclonic storm raged through the area with strong winds blowing and water lashing the shore. Empty streets were seen in the union territory with all shops closed. People were evacuated into safer areas, away from the coast. Labourers and their families who had been in the union territory were also moved to relief homes where they were kept in safety in the wake of the cyclone.

According to a report, a total of 197 people have been evacuated as the Diu administration geared up its preparations to tackle the severe cyclone. All the food and drinking expenses of their relief camps are being met by the Diu administration. The workers in the relief camp have also expressed their gratitude towards the administration for their support.

Cyclone Biporjoy made its landfall in neighbouring Gujarat where 50,000 people have been evacuated from the coastal areas.
