STORYLINE:

STANDUP (English): XIE YUAN, Xinhua correspondent
"China delivered more than 110 billion parcels last year. To explore more efficient delivery, the country has been applying 5G, AI and other cutting-edge technologies to the industry. Here in Yangquan, north China's Shanxi Province, 13 driverless vehicles were put into operation not long ago. Let's find out what the machines can do."

A total of 13 unmanned delivery vehicles have been put into operation recently in Yangquan, covering over 50 express stations and delivering more than 10,000 parcels on a daily basis.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): SHI QINJUN, Operation supervisor of the unmanned delivery vehicle project
"The unmanned delivery vehicle is equipped with a total of 11 cameras and 2 radar devices. It has two batteries below, allowing it to operate for up to 200 kilometers when fully charged. Compared with the traditional three-wheeled delivery vehicle, this one has a larger volume and load capacity. As you can see, it's very spacious with a total volume of 2.4 cubic meters and a load capacity of up to 600 kilograms. It can deliver one-third more parcels at a time and over 800 parcels per day."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): TIAN JUNWEI, Deputy general manager of China Post Yangquan Branch in Shanxi Province
"In the past, our mail delivery was dependent on human workers riding three-wheeled vehicles or driving cars.
The unmanned delivery vehicles save us about one to two hours per day, which greatly cuts costs. In addition, both the interior and exterior of the vehicles are equipped with surveillance cameras, ensuring the safety of parcel-handling. The use of rechargeable batteries is good for environmental protection in postal service."
