STORYLINE:

As the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry has grown exponentially in China in recent years, more Chinese carmakers have now set their sights on the European market.

Chinese electric car manufacturer NIO unveiled two new models, the EL6 and ET5 Touring for the European market on June 15 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The EL6 is a mid-sized SUV with a range of up to 529 kilometers while the ET5 Touring is an electric station wagon offering a range of 560 kilometers, both of which feature rechargeable and upgradeable battery technologies.

At Auto Shanghai 2023 held in April, Chinese automobile brands such as ZEEKR, NETA and HiPhi announced their plans to go to Europe.

According to ZEEKR, an electric vehicle brand from Chinese automotive giant Geely, it will enter most of Western Europe by 2026, and aims to become a leading brand in the EV market in Europe by 2030.

Chinese electric carmaker NETA has established a subsidiary in Europe, and it is preparing for its car models to enter the European market.

HiPhi, a luxury Chinese pure-electric brand, said its two models are expected to go on sale in Europe in the third quarter of this year.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, Chinese NEV production soared 96.9 percent from a year earlier to about 7.06 million units in 2022. The export volume of Chinese NEVs reached 679,000 units, an increase of 1.2 times year-on-year in 2022.
