STORYLINE:

The United Nations Environment Programme-International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP), a collaborative venture between the UNEP and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), on Tuesday marked the 10th anniversary since its inception.

The initiative aims at fostering scientific research on revitalizing the health of natural habitats in the global south.

Senior officials from the UNEP and the CAS, as well as scientists from China and Africa, graced the 10th-anniversary ceremony held in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JOHAN ROBINSON, Branch head of Ecosystems Division of UNEP
"UNEP-IEMP is a collaborative center, the only collaborating center in the global south. So basically it's providing science in order to address environmental issues. So the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is a partner in this collaboration, brings in a lot of sciences and work they are doing on scientific studies of environmental issues on how to react and implement solutions to these environmental problems."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ELIZABETH MREMA, Deputy Executive Director of UNEP
"One is particularly the research work which has been done and this is where the Chinese Academy of Sciences comes in because that's where innovations and the results of the research are  being implemented on the ground. We know all the work taking place or projects taking place here in Kenya. And we hope this achievement will be further up-scaled to be able to reach out to more countries."
