STORYLINE:

Widespread riots, looting, and violence have been sparked in France by the fatal shooting of a teen by police near Paris on Tuesday last week.

A police officer opened fire and killed the 17-year-old boy after the latter failed to comply with a police order to stop his car.

The public discontent has risen amid the week-long violent protests and riots throughout France.

SOUNDBITE 1 (French): Student in Paris
"I don't think it's justified to shoot to kill. But both sides were at fault.
On the one hand, it was wrong to refuse to comply with police orders.
But on the other hand, that does not justify shooting to kill. There needs to be a reform of the police."

SOUNDBITE 2 (French): Paris resident
"Since the 1990s, the problem of law and order has become increasingly serious, with young people disobeying and the police sometimes falling into their trap.
They were unprepared to deal with this situation.
The police are not always at fault, the responsibility lies with the government, whether left or right."

SOUNDBITE 3 (French): Student in Paris
"Violence is totally unjustified and I am against demonstrations for this reason. In such cases, people should question politicians directly or demonstrate in front of police stations, which I can understand.
For example, to express their grievances in front of a police station, or in front of a government office.
However, disgruntled people destroy the cars of people who need jobs, destroy shops, and destroy schools."

SOUNDBITE 4 (French): Student in Paris
"Generally speaking, thugs do this not to support a truth, but to hurt others.
So I think it's unreasonable and disappointing."

SOUNDBITE 5 (French): Paris resident
"The French are scattered and undisciplined, which I could not see in other countries.
Here, there is total lawlessness."
