STORYLINE:

A "post-90s" member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in a village in China's Henan has been helping residents increase income by teaching them how to operate agricultural drones.

Li Shufan is a veteran drone operator in Xishuimowan Village with five years of experience.

In 2019, Li started trying agricultural plant protection UAVs in the wheat field. After mastering the skills, she earned more than 10,000 yuan (about 1,385 U.S. dollars) with her husband in the second year.

She started training villagers in 2021. Now, more and more residents have acquired the skills and obtained more job opportunities.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI SHUFAN, Member of Xishuimowan Village Committee in Henan Province
"Over the past five years, I have encouraged and helped nearly 20 villagers, including young mothers like me, in learning how to operate drones. Now, they have also established their own sources of income, and have seen significant improvements in their quality of life."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): YUAN CHUNYING, Villager in Xishuimowan Village, Henan Province
"After Shufan's patient and meticulous training, I have gained a solid understanding of drone operation techniques. Hopefully I can have a daily income of 400 to 600 yuan (about 55.4 to 83.1 U.S. dollars) this autumn, and I'm so happy for it."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): ZHANG ZHIFEI, Villager in Xishuimowan Village, Henan Province
"Although Shufan is young, she has helped us a lot, and drones have enabled us to enjoy the benefits of modern agriculture."
