The Mayon Volcano released clouds of smoke and ash amid increased seismic activity in the Philippines.

Footage shows the 'perfect cone' volcano spewing fumes from its crater in Legazpi City, Albay province, early morning on July 12.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it recorded heightened activity at Mayon on Monday, which saw 33 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) - dangerous streams of ash, rocks, and gas - compared to just four on Saturday, July 8.

In a bulletin today, July 12, PHIVOLCS reported eight PDCs, 423 rockfall events, and 24 volcanic earthquakes over a 24-hour period.

State volcanologists have hoisted Alert Level 3 indicating an 'increased tendency towards hazardous eruption' over Mayon Volcano. They said the unrest could last for months, and the high-risk zone around the volcano may be expanded should the eruption intensify.

Mayon Volcano - a popular tourist attraction renowned for its 'perfect' conical shape - is the most active volcano in the Philippines. It last erupted in 2018, displacing around 40,000 residents.
