STORYLINE:

Yang Zhenqiang is an energy efficiency and carbon neutral building consultant, a new profession announced last year by China's human resources authority.

Yang is now working on a renovation project of a 7,000-square-meter office building in north China's Shanxi Province to reduce carbon emissions and electricity consumption.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): YANG ZHENQIANG, Energy efficiency and carbon neutral building consultant
"After the renovation, the annual heating cost can be saved by 240,000 yuan (about 33,600 U.S. dollars), and the electricity cost can be saved by 110,000 yuan (about 15,400 dollars).
Speaking of an energy efficiency and carbon neutral building, we can use insulation materials or even reflective thermal insulation coatings on its external walls. Roof greening also helps. Inside the building, we can use new energy equipment to replace the traditional split-type air conditioners or collective heating. These measures are all effective to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction."

Driven by China's "dual carbon" goals, energy efficiency and carbon neutral building consultants appear to be a promising career in the country.

"Our business is expanding. Our company has received orders from various cities in Shanxi Province, Heilongjiang Province, Jiangsu Province, and Beijing."
