A loggerhead sea turtle was checked by vets when it laid 79 eggs on a beach in Valencia, Spain, on Thursday, July 13.

A group of bathers called emergency services after seeing the turtle in the water near the seashore. A network of experts from the Agriculture department of the region, Valencia University, and the foundation Oceanografic went to the area to protect the nest and the turtle.

Vets from Oceanografic carried out an echography of the turtle and a blood test. They also installed a satellite tracker to monitor the animal in the following months and to know more about her travel.

Some 69 of the eggs were put in a protected beach of the natural park of Albufera and 10 were carried in incubators to the foundation Oceanografic to spread the risk and increase the likelihood of survival of the hatchlings.

According to the press statement of Oceanografic, more than 400 eggs of sea turtles have been spawned on the beach of Denia, Gandia, Elche, and Valencia in recent weeks.

The birth was the sixth nesting event detected on the coast of Valencia region this year, which conversationist said was a historic record.

They wildlife workers said it was a positive sign for the conservation of loggerhead sea turtles, which are a threatened species.

The increase in nesting activity in Valencia region is likely due to a number of factors, including improved protection measures and warmer sea temperatures, they said.
