SOUNDBITE (Arabic): ABDULLAH AL-FAK'HAL, Commander of the desert patrols of the Libyan Illegal Immigration Control Department
"Today, we are present at the Tunisian border, the Bishr area, where large numbers of illegal migrants of African nationalities have entered a vast desert area between Libya and Tunisia, about 15 to 20 kilometers to the nearest populated area. The situation is tragic. We find them in very bad condition. There is a lack of food and drinking water, and they have suffered dehydration for two or three days in this hot weather. The Tunisian authorities put them at the Libyan border. We suffer from this problem on a daily basis. Hundreds are being rescued, despite the lack of capabilities and assistance. We could not save some of them. Field medical teams transport the bodies under the instructions of the Public Prosecutor. We are doing our best. The issue is bigger than our capabilities and requires serious help from the government."
The humanitarian crisis at the Tunisia-Libya border has intensified in recent weeks, with more immigrants' bodies discovered by Libyan Border Control in uninhabited areas.
