Russian researchers have successfully used hydroponic technology to grow eight sweet watermelons at the Vostok Station in Antarctica, according to the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).

These ripe watermelons have red and yellow flesh and weigh about 1 kg each.

According to the researchers, the laboratory at the Vostok Station is expecting cucumbers in the near future, and scientists will also try to grow blackberries, strawberries and blueberries later, in the coldest place on earth.

According to reports, scientists have been planting vegetables in the laboratory at the Vostok Station since February 2020, and have successfully grown more than 80 varieties of vegetables.

Russia's Vostok Station was put into operation in December 1957. It's the place where the lowest temperature was recorded by ground measurement in July 1983 as minus 89.2 degrees Celsius.
