STORYLINE:

Serbia's national miners' day was marked on Sunday in Bor and Majdanpek with ceremonies, concerts, exhibitions, sports, an outdoor bazaar, and fireworks.

The celebration in the two cities in east Serbia was attended by representatives of the Serbian government, Chinese mining company Zijin, and local communities, including thousands of miners and their families.

Dragana Jelisavac Erdeljan, head of the mining sector at the Ministry of Mining and Energy of Serbia, expressed satisfaction that the Chinese mining company continues with Serbia's traditional celebration of the national miners' day.

"I want to express my pleasure with the fact that Zijin continues our tradition and shares our values, especially in the mining sector," she told Xinhua.

The city of Bor arose on Sunday to an early "miners' wake-up call," which marked the start of numerous festivities.

On this occasion, the Chinese company handed Serbia's "Engineer Sistek" awards to the most deserving individuals among the employees and also awards to the winners of the art competition inspired by Zijin's mines.

The Zijin Mining Group became a major shareholder of RTB Bor in December 2018. Its aim was to turn RTB Bor into a high-tech, green mining company. It has since then invested over 2 billion U.S. dollars in modern technology, environment protection as well as projects that improve the life of the local community.

Serbia's national miners' day was established in 1903 and has been celebrated to this day.
