Boeing 747 skids off runway while landing in China
A Boeing 747 veered off the runway while landing in China.
The jumbo jet was was carrying cargo from Anchorage, Alaska, when it skidded onto the wet grass at the Ningbo Lishe International Airport on August 7.
The tail and wing of the Boeing 747-400 cargo plane operated by Kalitta Air were overhanging the runway, blocking it and causing significant disruption to flight schedules.
There were no injuries to the three crew members on board. The airport was closed for several hours while the aircraft was removed from the runway. Flights were diverted to other airports in the region, and some were canceled.
The cause of the runway excursion is not yet known. However, weather conditions may have been a factor. The airport was reporting light rain and fog at the time of the incident.
The incident is being investigated by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
Boeing had produced the iconic 747 - nicknamed the Queen of the Skies - for more than 50 years before its its final 747 was delivered on January 31, 2023.
The large size of the jumbo jets and fuel inefficiency make the uneconomical for modern-day commercial aviation. Boeing is concentrating on its 787 Dreamliner and the 777X models.
