STORYLINE:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has brought its latest application in meteorology in China, as the country is using the technology to make weather forecasts more accurate to cope with weather disasters.

The Pangu Weather AI model developed by Chinese tech giant Huawei has three-dimensional neural networks for accurate and medium-range global weather forecasts.

Its prediction speed is 10,000 times faster than the traditional numerical methods.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): Employee of Huawei
"Our Pangu Weather AI model goes through a pre-training based on meteorological data of waves from the past 30 years. Then combined with real-time data, it can generate this marine weather data. It greatly improves the forecast efficiency. Maybe within 10 seconds, it can complete the whole prediction process."

During super typhoon Mawar this May, the model performed excellently by predicting the turning path five days in advance. The model also performed well in the forecast of Typhoon Doksuri this July.

This summer, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory deployed its Fengwu meteorological model on trial operation.

The Fengwu is a global medium-range weather forecast model based on multi-modal and multi-task deep learning technology.

Its predictions of tracks of Typhoon Doksuri and Typhoon Khanun have proved more accurate than some of the weather forecast agencies in Europe and the U.S.

Industry professionals believe AI models have greater development potential in China in the future.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): QIAO YU, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
"I think the advantages of China developing AI and large models lie in that we have more application scenarios, a broader market, and a relatively large number of talents across various fields. These are our advantages."
