A student was baffled to find his bulky automatic dorm bed doubled as a desk and closet.

Footage shows Max Cohen walking through the claustrophobic room while showing the all-in-one furniture that takes up most of the 15 sqm space at one of the University of Southern California apartments.

Max is seen in the video pointing to his desk and moving to a tighter space behind where he was supposed to sleep after moving in to the accommodation on August 20.

He pressed some buttons to pull up ‘bed mode' but did ‘desk mode' instead as he was still getting used to it.

The large customised furniture had a built-in closet above the pull-out single bed and shelves to fill in the extra spaces.

He said: ‘I just can't imagine bringing someone over and this what they see. Who thought this was a good idea?'
