European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday that the reappearance of wolf packs in some European regions is a "real danger" to other animals and "potentially to humans," while calling for a review of their protection status.

"The concentration of wolf packs in some European regions became a real danger for animal husbandry and potentially also for humans," the president of the European Commission said in a statement.

In the text, Von der Leyen called on "local and national authorities to take action where necessary. In fact, current European legislation allows them to do so".

Thus, the commission invited communities and scientists to provide updated data on the wolf population, and with that information will decide "a proposal to modify, where appropriate, the protection status of wolves" in the European Union (EU).

It may also introduce, "where necessary, greater flexibility, in the light of the evolution of this species".
