Buses battled to drive through a raging river amid monsoon flood and rains in the Philippines.

The jeepney minibuses waded through the surging stream to ferry locals in Tanay town, Rizal province some 40 miles east of the capital Manila, on September 5.

Resident Glyn Gutib said that since there were no paved roads leading out of the mountainous area, residents have been crossing the rocky riverbed to exit the town.

However, he said the river always swells during rainfall, making travel especially difficult during the country's stormy monsoon season.

Glyn said: 'These are the challenges faced by us living out here in the mountains. I hope the local authorities finally listen to us and build a proper road so we don't have such a hard time when it rains.'

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
