Divers explore the B-24 Liberator bomber aircraft off Malta's coast. Video footage shows the recovery of a US airman's remains from the plane that crashed during World War II. The aircraft, part of a 10-man crew, was damaged after a raid over Sicily in 1943. It was hit by flak on its way back, injuring five crew members before crashing into the sea near Malta's coastline.

Sergeant Irving R. Newman, aged 22, was the only crew member not to escape and had been missing in action. His remains have now been retrieved. The plane's location was discovered in 2015 using sonar equipment. A team from the University of Malta and Vulcan, Inc. located the wreckage at a depth of 180 feet near Benghajsa Point, Malta. Archaeologists and divers recovered material evidence, life support equipment, and human remains, later confirmed to be Sergeant Newman's through strict archaeological and scientific methods.

This mission, assigned by the DPAA, honored Sergeant Newman's memory and provided closure for his family. Sergeant Newman is memorialized at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.
