A motorist was baffled as he encountered large sections of the road covered with grain that had been laid out by local farmers to dry in the sun, which led him to question traffic safety in the area.

The driver recorded the bizarre layout while travelling near Zhumadian, in north-central China's Henan Province on September 17.

In the video more than half of the road appears to be covered with grain, forcing the driver to switch from one lane to another to evade it.

He was forced to slow down to carefully pass through in order to avoid accidentally skidding across the seeds and veering off the road.

The motorist expressed concerns about traffic safety. He said: 'Highways are for vehicles, not for drying food. Who is to blame for traffic accidents?'

The Zhumadian traffic police said they have since asked the farmers to clear out the road. They added that it is not a highway but rather a section of ordinary road outside the toll station.
