Patrick Magennis, a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon on the picket outside Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, said: “I’m from Northern Ireland and in Northern Ireland the pay of a consultant is half the pay that somebody would get in Dublin. Why would anyone work in Belfast when they could work in Dublin? That’s just the way it is. So people are voting with their feet.”
He said the lack of staff meant there were not enough people to man theatre lists, which led to long waiting lists.
