STORYLINE:

On the second anniversary of the China-proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI), observers have spoken positively about China's efforts to promote shared development worldwide on a win-win basis.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): GULRU GEZER, Former Turkish diplomat and foreign policy analyst
"One of the most important aspects of the GDI is the inclusiveness aspect of it. Because until now, we've seen development models where, unfortunately, the developed world continues to develop, whereas the developing countries and the least developed countries do not get their fair share in the international system."

China proposed the initiative in 2021 with the hope that countries will work together to overcome the impacts of COVID-19, accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and build a global community of development with a shared future.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English) GULRU GEZER, Former Turkish diplomat and foreign policy analyst
"So China's approach actually shows that the world can only solve its problems and prosper if there's a collective effort. We are seeing that with China, the global South is also adopting this approach."

According to a report released by the Chinese government in June, in just the past year, China has established more than 100 projects to promote the GDI, benefiting nearly 40 developing countries. Additionally, China has set up 1,000 capacity-building projects and provided 20,000 training opportunities in relevant countries.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): KHALID TAIMUR AKRAM, Executive Director of Pakistan Research Center for Community with Shared Future
"The Global Development Initiative really touches upon everyone's lives in all aspects. I very strongly feel that the people-centric approach given in Global Development Initiative is a must. Global Development Initiative not only encompasses the human centric development, but they also give a vision in which there is a win-win situation for all the partner countries. I think adhering to Global Development Initiative can change any country's economy, especially all those countries who are part of the Belt and Road Initiative with China."

Soundbite 4 (Turkish): AKKAN SUVER, Head of Istanbul-based Marmara Group Strategic and Social Research Foundation
"I believe that the GDI will be more productive in the coming years."
