The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded this Tuesday to the Frenchman Pierre Agostini, the Austro-Hungarian Ferenc Krausz and the Swedish-French Anne L'Huillier “for experimental methods that generate attosecond light pulses for the study of the dynamics of electrons in matter.

“The winners have been recognized for their experiments, which have provided humanity with new tools to explore the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules,” explained the Swedish Academy of Sciences.

According to the Committee, Agostini, Krausz and L'Huillier "have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy." In addition, they pointed out that the contributions of the winners “have made it possible to investigate processes that are so fast that were previously impossible to follow.”
