Hard working Coot parent rips up waterweeds – looking for worms to feed its tiny, bald chicks.

Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra) are widely distributed throughout the world and are a common sight on urban lakes and ponds. Coots are mostly vegetarian, eating aquatic and terrestrial plants, but they do take animal food, including worms, shrimps and insects. This hard-working Coot parent moved to the lake edge after diving for algae to feed its five tiny, bald chicks and began digging up Water Hyssop (Bacopa monnieri) in order to find worms. Two chicks waited nearby, and one was rewarded with a worm.
