This is the shocking moment a mother desperately tries to save her two-year-old daughter from a vicious dog that suddenly attacked her in the street and began dragging her across the grass.

CCTV footage captured the terrifying incident that took place in the Hengda Xichen Oasis community in Chengdu, in China's south-western Sichuan Province on October 16.

The disturbing clip shows the large black dog attacking the child, named Tang, on the grassy ground below a residential building at around 8 am.

Her mum, named Deng, desperately tried to cover her with her body to protect her from the dog that grabbed the toddler by her clothes and on her body and began dragging her around.

Another white dog then circled around, and an elderly woman rushed over to help and tried to drive away the dogs with a mop. A man also joined in and helped chase off the animals with a pole.

Afterwards, the mum could be seen sitting on the grass, visibly shaken and tightly holding onto her girl before the footage ends. The girl was later taken to hospital with multiple bites all over his body, a contused and lacerated injury to the right kidney, and a fractured rib on the right side.

Doctors cleaned up her wounds, and the girl was reported to be in stable condition. Her mother, Deng suffered abrasions on the body surface and has also been treated.

The fire department reportedly managed to capture the white dog but was unable to locate the black dog. The public security authorities said they are conducting a comprehensive investigation and handling the situation.

Property management staff in the community told reporters that currently, the injured child remains hospitalised.

Management staff told local media: 'The incident happened around seven or eight o'clock this morning [Monday].

'We have already contacted the police, fire department, and community, and they are all dealing with this matter.

'One dog has been controlled, but the black dog is still missing. It is more aggressive than the white dog and not easy to control.

'The dog owner is also searching, and the property leader has visited the child in the hospital.'

As for why the dogs were not on leashes, property staff claimed that they usually remind residents to leash their dogs, but some residents do not listen.

Officials said that they are aware of the incident but have not received a specific report from the community. The investigation is ongoing. No further details have been disclosed yet.
